Winter birding in Bulgaria - 7 days.

Winter in Bulgaria can be unforgettable experience. With mild winter and sunny weather it is an attractive place for many birds to winter. On this tour we have a chance to enjoy a wide range of avifauna, the highlights being – Red breasted geese, Lesser White fronted geese, White-headed duck, Dalmatian pelicans, Great black headed gull, Great-spotted eagle, Rough-legged buzzard and many more.

Day 1 Saturday: Arrive at Burgas and bird in the area if time.

Day 2 Sunday: Burgas lakes. Today we’ll explore Burgas wetlands – one of the prime IBA in Bulgaria and a Ramsar site. Around the lakes we’ll be looking for White-headed duck, Dalmatian pelican, Pigmy cormorant, Great white egret, Ruddy Shelduck, Ferruginous duck, Black throated diver, Black-necked and Slavonian grebe, White-tailed eagle, Hen harrier.












Day 3 Monday: Strandzha. A day trip to Strandzha mountain and several small marshes to the south, looking for Great-spotted, Syrian, Middle and Lesser spotted woodpeckers, White-backed woodpecker is also possible today.

Day 4 Tuesday: Burgas – Kavarna. Today we move on north towards Kavarna, which will be our base for the next three days. On the way we’ll stop in the Balkan range to check for Green and Grey headed woodpeckers, Sombre tit, Hawfinch, Yellowhammer. Later we’ll call at Balchik harbour which often attracts interesting gulls.

Day 5 Wednesday: Durankulak. Today we’ll spend the day at Durankulak, looking for the Red breasted geese. The surrounding wheat fields provide good feeding ground for huge flocks of White-fronted geese, sometimes mixed with Red-breasted and several Lesser-white fronted geese.















Day 6 Thursday: Durankulak. Another day in the area of Durankulak and Shabla lake  to search for Red-breasted geese. Other possible species are White-tailed eagle, Spotted eagle, Rough legged buzzard, Black-throated diver, Bewick and Whooper swans.

Day 7 Friday: Transfer to Burgas airport for return flight back home.
